Up and running..well sort of

Yep, the one that we have all been waiting on has decided to grace us with walking..FINALLY!!!

I don't think I blogged about our pediatrician's appointment (18-month appt) where the Dr (not our usual Dr) recommended a neurology assessment for Kendall as well as a speech and physical therapy assessment for both girls. When our usual Dr came into the room (he had been running late but popped his head in at the end) he did not agree about the neurologist thing. He agreed with Storm and I about it being a "motivation" issue not a physical one. He's been our Doc since Day 15 with the girls and knows their personalities so understands about Kendall's hesitation sometimes.

Anyway, Storm and I decided to take a "wait-and-see" approach before scheduling any of the assessments. The girls are babbling and communicating to each other and say "Hi u-d" and "Hi o-ta" when greeting the dogs and duck, banana and thank you are becoming more obvious everyday. They recognize so many words out of their "Baby can read" cards and know a lot of their body parts so I'm not worried about that. They understand us so well so the speech thing is going to happen (but then I'm sure I'll post about how I cannot shut them up!) So I'm not concerned at this stage.

OK, back to the point of the post...

Anyway, Storm has been working with Kendall. He kept saying he was "going to break her" and before you non-farming people think the worst and call CPS, he meant break her like a horse. He kept pushing her and didn't pay attention to her tantrums or refusals to do anything and made her walk for a while everyday. It sounds rough and some days it was. She would fuss and cry and not stand but he worked her through it and lo and behold last night...

SHE WALKED!!!!

She went back and forth for several minutes between the coffee table and their snack table. She was having a ball! I got it on tape but still have to transfer it from the camera to the computer (actually Storm does this!) but I have evidence. 2 or so minutes of it!

So cool. Finally.

P.S. Now it means that she's more mobile and more prone to being knocked over by the doggoes. Syd has learned the hard way that when the dogs come near she has to go to ground and has a better chance of getting through the encounter unscathed. Kendall still has to learn this and my concern with that is that her new found confidence may shatter should she be knocked over too much/too soon etc. We'll see.

Poopy week

This week has been a bit of a nasty one for the Kulhan family.

Both girls are still struggling with cutting their molars and as a result have been drool-ey, whing-ey, off their food-ey {had to make it rhyme!-couldn't resist!} and guaranteed one or the other has had a rough night, each night.

With Kendall it's early on in the evening. She'll cry and fuss for hours on end. The only way around it is to cuddle her for an hour or so and then sing the "nigh-nigh" song. She'll usually go down but may still have an opinion about it on the way in.

Now with Syd, it varies from early, early morning (12.30-1.00am) to mid-sleep (3.30-4.30am) or too early to get up yet morning (6.00-6.30am). I tell a lie. She always stirs around 12.30am-1.00am as this when she needs her "di-di" {her words} and invariably can never find it. I think that this is when her circadian rhythms transition and she needs that familiarity.

Either way every night it means one of two things.

1)I plan ahead and place two "di-di's" into her crib and hope that she doesn't knock them out with her frenetic sleeping style.

2)I stay awake {even after turning out the lights - or alternatively I stay up watching TV} waiting for her to stir.

The issue with Syd not having her "di-di" {and yes I know that some of you purists out there are judging me for the fact that she still has a "di-di" at this age but rest assured that when we move to TX and we have an extra set of hands - in the shape of Mavis -  we are starting the weaning process. Wish us luck cos' this girl loves her "di-di"} is that if she wakes up and starts screaming and crying she pretty much wakes herself up and can take up a couple of hours to get back to sleep. God forbid should she wake up sleeping beauty #2 {K} because she's fairly much on a similar circadian rhythm thingey because then we have two babies giggling and rattling their cribs sides {bless}. Note that this can go on for hours with both girls having the time of their lives in their darkened room, in the light of streetlamp sprinkled through the curtains or the torchlight of their classical music toy. Yes, I said hours. Hours.

The same thing goes for the other two wake-up times except that when we have teething issues she will wake up fully both times and will not be placated by her "di-di". It's cuddles or nothing.

So, as I wrote in the beginning - this week has been a week of alternating children's issues. One night it's Kendall and one night it's Sydney, the next night Kendall, the next night Syd. It's been fun - NOT!

Oh and by the way - their molars are still not cutting! Both girls have lovely mounds on their gums where the teeth should be emerging from their gummy beds but no - they're still buried with both kiddoes sticking fingers right up to {what seems} their elbows!

Anyway, so the girls have been rather testy this week and between the finalization of the magazine lists, getting quotes from removalists {nightmare!} and packing, it's been a nasty week.

Real poopy.

Fingers crossed next week will be better.

On a happier note - my mum just managed to book flights from Sydney into Houston on Qantas for just over $1000! Unbelievable price. So she will be joining us in TX for late June/all July.

Also, only something like 9 weeks until Mavis meets us in L.A. Woo hoo!

BTW - I'll be taking piccies of the RV soon as it's getting closer to being somewhat presentable! So excited!

41 observations.....

Here is my countdown with 41 observations about me turning 41.

41. I have given up on making new years resolutions as they do not work for me.

40. I think about being organized more than I actually am and plan on working on achieving perfection in this area this decade.

39. I'm realizing that I need to have an outlet that is not child/hubby/work related. I need to get back into scrapbooking and crafting again and look forward to it when we move to TX.

38. I have become noticibly more chicken-s**t when it comes to doing stuff now and will never bungy-jump, skydive or do any of the things that I wanted to do when I was younger. Having the girls made me more aware of random accidents that could take me away from them. Not gunna happen.

37. I am aware that I will be dye-ing my hair for the rest of my life in one way or another. Be it blonde highlights or a brunette rinse it will have to cover up the gray that has made it's home in my hair.

36. I have figured out what works for me and won't so therefore tend to stay within the same group of clothes styles/items, hair styles/colours and make up.

35. Coffee means so much more to me than ever before.

34. I still change into sweats/casual clothes when I get home. This goes back to my school days when I would have to change out of my uniform the minute I got home from school.

33. I think that I'm a better mum now that I'm this age versus if I had of had the girls when I was younger.

32. I actually enjoy watching Hallmark movies that are feelgood and somewhat cliche. I still enjoy the zombie/horror/world's gonna end films but don't watch them as much anymore as they tend to make me think of Point 29.

31. I have trouble letting something go and have an incredible need to be in control of things. {Unless I have absolute faith in the person who is in charge and believe in them that much to do the task to my standard}.

30. I am beginning to become one of those people who refuse to learn any more technologies. I am quite happy being that person who sounds like the grandmother who won't use an ATM or a cell phone.

29. I have also begun to think that zombies or a world wide epidemic of plague proportions is getting closer to reality everyday and always think of exit strategy every where I go. {Note: I have yet to come up with the ideal plan with the two kiddoes in tow}

28. I am becoming a firm believer in the role of having a weapon in the house. One that is properly secured and only used for the protection of the home and those within.

27. I've become more and more opinionated as I get older. I believe that rules/regulations were put in place for the good of the community and that anyone who violates someone's rights/things/house/property/family etc deserves to be shot. There is no place in this world for those who aren't willing to be productive members of the community. See, aren't I opinionated?

26. My memory is going and I'm having to put things back in the same places each time otherwise I waste precious time looking for them.

25. Speaking of memory I am slowly turning into my grandmother with her problem of calling a member of the family every other member of the family's name until she gets to the right one. Picture me looking at Sydney and saying "Storm. Kendall. Rudy. Oscar. You. You. Sydney that's right". Not good. I think that the girls are getting a bit confused as to their correct name.

24. I'm distinctly qualified to yell at stupid drivers now that I've been driving for over 20 years. {Even if they are driving the car I'm travelling in..}

23. I've realized that I cannot sit in cinema seats comfortably. I'm always thinking of the person who was sitting there before me. {This is cheating a bit as I've felt this way a while but recently it's been giving me the creeps a lot more...} Since we've been in the U.S. we've been to the movies twice {in 7 years}. It's got to be a real good movie that keeps me enthralled and not thinking about the germies on the seaties.

22. I've realized that buying clothes that don't need to be ironed or alternatively fold/hang them the minute they come out of the dryer is an absolute necessity for me. After all this time I know I don't like ironing.

21. Speaking of things that I've figured out I don't like... cleaning bathrooms.

20. Or vacuuming...

19. Or dusting...

18. Guess housework just sucks all around for me doesn't it? I'm going to have to earn more money and get a cleaner.

17. Going out just doesn't interest me anymore. I worked in hospitality for many, many years and noise, smoke and people making stupid conversation just doesn't hold my interest.

16. I would rather have a BBQ/get together at someone's house/go out for a casual dinner and catch up with friends that way.

15. I've become real particular about who I care about.

14. I don't have a lot of time for people who are pains in my arse and are suckers of my life. Sometimes it's harder to get rid of them out of my life than I'd like but I'm smart and dedicating a part of my brain to figuring out a way to do it efficiently and effectively.

13. I've now become that person who has to hold a piece of paper at a certain distance to read it. I find that incredibly funny. {I know that one day I'll have to get glasses but that means I'll also have to overcome the issues two points down.}

12. I am unable to bend at the knees and get back up again. Both knees {especially the right} are unstable and sometimes feel that they're about to bend backwards. {Damn playing soccer and being athletic for all those years. I shouldn't have exercised!}

11. I don't like going to the Doctor. I find waiting a significant amount of time for 5 minutes with someone who has may or may not be having a bad day/not eaten/got to get done for the day and doesn't really take the time to get to know me and my issue a waste of my time. {Mind you if I got rid of the HMO it might not be so bad :)}

10. I should know better by this age that buying quality products should be the way to go but I still usually lean towards quantity over quality.

9. I am now in the "middle" part of my life.

8. I feel that I have had enough life experience to be able to lecture my kids successfully and tell them things {now, if only they would a) listen, b) care and c) understand!}

7. I'm getting to the point where trends are starting to come around again. Yes, I should have kept my wardrobe accessories from 1987 {not the clothes though - who am I kidding?}

6. I consider myself to be very lucky to have travelled to 38 countries and lived for an extended amount of time in three {not including my home country}. Mind you I worked hard holding down two jobs working a total of 15 hours a day, 6 days a week for 3 months to get there for one trip but I was still lucky.

5. I was 21 when my mum turned 41.

4. My grandmother was a grandmother at age 41.

3. It's only nine years until I turn 50. Sigh.

2. It's still nine years until I turn 50! Woo hoo.

1. Hey, it's my birthday and any birthday where I get presents is great for me! I love presents

Confession time!

I have a dirty little secret.;)

I haven't been to the dentist for a check up and cleaning in 10 years (when I used to work for one).

Until today.

Guess what?

The dentist told me that she couldn't believe that I don't have any cavities and any problems with my gums after such a long "hiatus". The hygenist was surprised as well.

My nervousness about going was completely unfounded and I am thrilled! So, so happy.....

Night out.

Go figure. Did you know that up until last night Storm and I have only been out together without the kids twice in 18 months? And one of those times was in a group setting!

So, now after last night the count is three. Woo hoo!

Why? Well my birthday is due again in a couple of days and since he'll be ice fishing next weekend he organized for Kerri and Al to sit the girls (thanks guys - so, so much!) and for us to have a couple of hours to ourselves.

So what did we do? We went to a casino of course! The Cannery is close to Kerri and Al's so uber convenient for a 3-hour sojourn. After a couple of drinks at the lounge, we headed to the italian restaurant there. Now previously to last night I had distinctly said to Stormy - no italian! We have had pasta every night this week {mind you I cooked up the best, I mean the best seafood penne bake the other night - delicioso!} and I was done with carby meals. I wanted protein!

But in saying that we had also watched Diners, Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network and one of the places that Guy had visited was an italian place in Chicago that made {what looked like} the best cioppino. In fact, Guy actually asked the chef to leave his restaurant and go back to LA with him - he never says that! Anyway, as I wrote, the cioppino looked sensational on the show and lo and behold the italian restaurant at the Cannery served...yep, you guessed it, cioppino! So it had to be done and apart from being a little peppery - it was goooooood.

Anyway, so after an enjoyable meal where we took our time and didn't have to hold or entertain either one or both children we took our $20 to the one-cent pokies and promptly lost it all before realizing the time.

We rushed back to Kerri and Al's to find both children oh so mellowly lying on their couches and so incredibly exhausted by the Galvin girls.

I swear that when I looked at her, darling Kendall gave me a look that went along the lines of "You left me. You left me. I lived but you left me. Don't. Do. It. Again."

Sydney had the look of "Please get me to my bed. I've played and played and it was good but now I'm tired."

We left pretty quickly {after leaving some yummy dessert from the restaurant for Kerri and Al} and the girls managed to get a second wind as we got home. Yay! {Read: sarcasm} It took a little bit to get them to settle down and once they did I managed to have a nights sleep that was slow to start {as always! It would be so nice to fall asleep quickly for a change! Perhaps that can be my birthday wish?} and was interrupted only once during the night. Gotta love 7.30am. It rocks.

My thanks again to my darling sweetness who organized it all and to Kerri and Al who made it all possible. Cheers!

Gotta love the fur-babies

You know when you think your kid is going to grow up and be in a particular profession because when they're 18 months old they have a passion for something?

Do you think that after all the posts that I've done about Kendall and her love for the doggoes that she will grow up and run an animal shelter (vets have to do sad things and that's not in her nature at this stage)? Possibly. We'll have to wait and see.

Here is another gratuitous shot or two of Kendall lovin' the boys whilst watching Barney at the farm on the couch.

She truly loves these dogs and luckily they love her back just as much.

A bad influence?

We've noticed that the girls are really beginning to pay attention and copy the things that we do.

For example, Syd went to the trashcan today and actually lifted up the lid and put a piece of paper in it. We've never asked her to do that before so we were absolutely gobsmacked.

So that's an example of the good copying that is happening in our household.

Here is one that may raise a few eyebrows...Can you guess what it is?

Yes, they're "cheers-ing".

Does mummy and daddy enjoy a bevvy or two at dinnertime? Uh, huh.

Are the girls learning something that may draw a curious eye and cast aspersions upon our parenting skills? Maybe so.

It's cute though. And the girls get such a kick out of it.

A winter's day

Check out the shades...
Syd with dad. {Check out the hair/beard/chest!}

 Kendall loving wearing them.
 Check out my fingers when I look through these glasses....

Or when I check out the ceiling....
 Nope, these ain't 3-D and that's my nose, Syd.
 These glasses are hard core and so am I!

Not a snow day...

....it was a snow three (or so) hours!

Not much but we'll take it!

This is what we woke up to. Which is funny because it was so dark with the curtains drawn that we both thought the girls were crazy for waking up so early (it was 7.15am!). It was also quite cold in the house. Well SURPRISE!!!!

It was snowing! The view from our bedroom window.

Well such an opportunity could not be wasted with the girls quickly learning the word "Snow" and seemingly were interested in heading out into it. So we dressed warmly and went out the front.

As normal Kendall wasn't too happy about wearing something on her head so she is sans-hat!

 I hate to state the obvious but don't they look like twins in this pic?
 Syd wasn't too sure about the snow and was very, very hesitant about touching/feeling/looking at the snow. Kendall was loving it gung-ho style. I managed to get the hat on once her head became wet and cold.
 This where Syd started to go downhill quite quickly.
 And then she was gone...tears and an utter refusal to touch the snow. Kendall would have been rolling in it if we would have let her.
 Views of the backyard.

The view across the valley. Yes, no sunrise mountain to be seen.
Storm kept saying how much he wants to live in the snow. How much we were missing...etc, etc, etc.

I kept saying how bleeding cold it was and noting all of the accidents around town (brought to our attention by the traffic report on the news. Yes, us Las Vegas cannot seem to get it together come any weather that isn't sunshine and intense heat!).

Anyway, we will not be moving anywhere it snows on a regular basis in winter or otherwise. We are moving to Texas where the days will be longer, the weather will be milder (even with the hurricanes) and the beach welcomes me with open arms....

Snow is nice for vacations and for the occasional three hours. Thanks for the surprise!

Happy New Year

2011 is here.

Our new years eve was spent eating chinese with the kids (they tried a little), watching movies on Netflix and watching the fireworks in Vegas on TV (not worth the $$ spent by those who decide).

The first day of this year was spent in bed. Me? I had a migraine starting and knew that I had the hit the hay with some pain killers to stop it from taking hold. Stormy was just tired. The girls napped as per usual. The dogs didn't get a say.

All day we've been thinking it's Sunday (to the point where I got the garbage organized -the trashman comes on Monday's) so it's been interesting.

In all it's been a real lazy way to start the year. It's going to last only one day though so we're enjoying it. Back on the packing/working bike tommorrow!

I hope all my favourite people have had a wonderful start to the new year and wish you all the joys and success that you deserve!
